MacDill Air Force Base Runway Ponding

MacDill AFB is home to the 6th Air Mobility Wing, and to 28 mission partners, including U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command. Areas adjacent to the main runway were poorly graded which allowed standing water which in turn made mowing of the grass difficult and attracted birds. To correct this problem we contracted with Danner Construction to perform the earthwork, storm drainage, and regrading of approximately 150 acres of land on the West side of the runway and to construct a 10 acre mitigation pond as a source of fill dirt. The mitigation pond was located adjacent to Tampa Bay in tidal areas so dewatering to construct the pond was managed by excavating rim ditches, creating berms, and pumping clean water back into the uplands areas.  This project included 160,000 CY of excavation, 670,000 SY of grading, 1,400 Lf of storm drainage piping, water line relocation, and 36,500 SY of rock lining in ditches which were below the water table where mowing of grass was implacable.
