Hart MetroRapid

The Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority (HART) was created in October of 1979 to plan, finance, acquire, construct, operate and maintain mass transit facilities and supply transportation assistance in Hillsborough County. In 2011, HART created MetroRapid to improve travel along selected service corridors between downtown Tampa and the University of South Florida area and business areas in Temple Terrace. The service features 59 new bus stations/shelters with fewer stops, traffic signal priority to increase travel speed, and off vehicle ticket vending machines. The 17.5 mile corridor starting from downtown Tampa travels Nebraska Ave. north up to Fletcher Ave and then east past USF and into Telecom Park and Hidden River Park all in less than one hour. In July of 2012, DNCC was awarded the contract by HART to construct the 59 bus stations. Our scope of work at each station included the maintenance of traffic, lane closures, clearing and demolition, earthwork, utility relocations, storm drainage, pavement widening with concrete and asphalt paving, curbs, sidewalks, shelter foundations and concrete pads, guard railing, fencing, bollards, bike racks, trash receptacles, landscaping, signage, pavement markings, electrical services and lighting. Separate right of way and electrical permits were obtained by DNCC for each station which involved permits from the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County, FDOT, and the City of Temple Terrace. An aggressive construction schedule called for substantial completion of our work by May, 2013. After the permits were obtained, our actual start date was August 2012 which meant we had to complete at least (2) two stations per week. Despite numerous delays, we were able to meet the required dates and HART was able to open MetroRapid to the public a few months later.
